Relationship Therapy

Relationships can be incredibly rewarding but equally challenging. Relationships will naturally experience some ebbs and flows over the course of time, but it can become worrisome when you start to feel “disconnected”. You might find yourselves spending less time together because of work or parenting. Or maybe you start to feel like there isn’t much to talk about anymore. You might even find yourself questioning if this is the relationship you still want to be in. These challenging moments can leave partners feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, and stuck in unhealthy patterns. These patterns can foster feelings of hurt, anger, resentment, guilt, hopelessness, and feeling disconnected. The reality is that it’s normal to experience challenges in relationships. There are times when you will notice the “check engine” light come on in your car, and you call your mechanic for some maintenance. At ITS, we encourage you to look at relationship challenges as the “check engine” light signalling that it might be time for a tune-up on communication skills and time to consider relationship therapy.

Difficulties in relationships can be painful but they also serve as an opportunity to grow individually and with your partner. That’s where we come in! Your relationship therapist will help you navigate challenges that come up and rediscover what makes your relationship meaningful. Relationship sessions are non-judgmental and foster an atmosphere that allows you to get in touch with what makes your relationship fulfilling. Together, you will implement concrete strategies that can be used in your day-to-day life and in the years to come. Relationship therapy is valuable at any stage of life, whether you’ve been together for a few years or a few decades, we are here to help.

Did you know that on average clients wait 6 years from the conception of relationship problems until they access their first therapy session?  Don’t waste another second contemplating if now is the right time for therapy. There will never be the “perfect time” to come to therapy.

When is it a good idea to access relationship counselling?

  • Increasing conflict, difficulty with communication, or lack of dialogue;
  • Changes in emotional intimacy, affection, or physical intimacy;

  • Parenting issues.

Our relationship therapists welcome LGBTQ+, non-monogamous, and polyamorous couples.

Family Therapy

Our physical and mental health is impacted by the relationships around us. Family therapy encourages the clients to understand patterns in relationships and create changes by focusing on the family system, rather than the issues of a specific individual within the family. That’s because when the family dynamics change, the whole family is affected.

Family relationships can become strained for any number of reasons. Family therapy allows the opportunity for a safe place to discuss concerns, encourage dialogue, and relieve stress in relationships. This type of therapy involves sessions with all of the members of the family unit. There are no age restrictions for family therapy. ITS family therapists are trained to work with young children and adults, which means that you can access therapy at any point in time.

Family dynamics can be impacted for a number of reasons:

  • Divorce, Separation, and Blended Family Dynamics;
  • Addiction and Substance Abuse;
  • Geographical Moves;
  • Grief and Loss;
  • Mental Health Concerns;
  • Parenting Challenges;
  • Physical Health Concerns or Chronic Illness;
  • Anger Issues.

How can family therapy help? According to the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, family therapy is effective for treating a broad range of problems and 76% of patients who completed family counselling experienced improvements. Some of the benefits from family therapy include:

  • Build deeper and closer connections;
  • Create honest and open communication and skills for the future;
  • The opportunity to reflect on difficult experiences that have impacted the family and build meaning from them.
