What is Forensic Therapy?

Forensic Therapy is the term used for individuals who are accessing counselling as a result of involvement with the law and justice system. Forensic therapy can be voluntary or mandated. ITS is a one of a kind clinic that specializes in providing comprehensive forensic mental health treatment and assessment. All of our service providers are trained in working with forensic populations and offer 35 years of combined experience. Our goal is to provide the legal community with easy access to one agency that can meet many needs.

Our areas of practice include:

  • Assault;
  • Family Violence;
  • Record Suspension;
  • Impaired Driving;
  • Risk Assessment;
  • Sexual Offense Treatment;
  • Substance Abuse Treatment and Assessment;
  • Shoplifting;
  • Property Crime;
  • Anger Management;
  • Drug or Alcohol Issues;
  • Bail Hearings;
  • Immigration or Deportation;
  • Psychological Testing and Assessment.

Risk Assessment and Reporting

ITS offers assessment services for pretrial treatment reports, presentence reports, and general risk of recidivism. Assessments can be useful for informing treatment, evaluating the risk of recidivism, offering recommendations, and demonstrating treatment efforts and willingness to address concerns. General risk of recidivism reports are useful for situations regarding returning to work, challenging licensing bodies, immigration/deportation concerns, record suspension applications, entry waiver applications and more.

Treatment

We offer a variety of treatment services for forensic therapy clients:

  • Pretrial treatment to provide guidance and support through the justice process, family counselling, and address treatment needs prior to trial or sentencing;
  • Addictions treatment and assessment for individuals with a drug, alcohol, or problematic behaviour that has resulted in a criminal charge or conviction, or contributed to offending risk factors;
  • Therapy appointments to provide support for bail release;
  • Individual therapy mandated by the courts;
  • Group therapy for shoplifting, sexual offending, and substance abuse.

When a person is referred to ITS for treatment and assessment, we assign these services to different therapists to prevent reporting bias. Having both treating and assessing therapists at one service allows our clients to get streamlined service, while also meeting ethical and legal standards.

Additionally, clinicians at ITS have the forensic expertise to treat the complex needs of those impacted by criminal offenses. That’s why we offer treatment for victims and their families (personal injury or criminal offense), as well as the professionals who work with them and can experience vicarious trauma, burnout and PTSD. This includes first responders, lawyers, physicians, case managers, parole officers, and social workers. We offer direct billing to Calgary Police Services, Workers Compensation Board of Alberta, and Veterans Affairs Canada to support our clientele accessing support for workplace injuries and trauma.
